The FPSC provides the following social and competitive pathway in line with the Swimming WA competition structure

Swimming WA Competition Structure

Once a competitive training/squad routine is established, swimmers will most likely be keen to progress to competition, whether its social or competitive. The Swimming WA competition structure is designed around a tiered approach. Each tier represents the reasons that the swimmer is participating and the over-arching principle for the meets within that tier.

The FPSC provides the following social and competitive pathway in line with the Swimming WA competition structure:

FPSC Club Nights

These include “Have-a-Go” and Entry Level meets.

Club Nights are a fun, low pressure competition which are generally held once a month over the summer competition season (less frequently in winter season) at the Fremantle Leisure Centre on a Saturday afternoon.

Club Nights are for swimmers to practice the skills learnt during training, and to enjoy the company of their teammates. We encourage swimmers attempt at least one Club Night during each summer and winter season as not only does coming to Club Night put all the hard training you have done into practice; it reinforces the skills your coach has taught you.

The format of the Club Night may change on occasion to include a ‘Have-a-Go’ component (Tier 8) for new swimmers or interested squad swimmers who are thinking of joining the FPSC.

Club Nights are open to ALL membership types, and we encourage any squad swimmers to come and try a Club Night out! If you are not a FPSC member but would like to swim at a Club Night please contact our registrar at fremantleportswimmingclub@gmail.com

Team Events

As a member of FPSC you will have the opportunity to compete as a club against other clubs at the following events:

  • Club Premiership
  • League Championship

Club Premiership: A fun club based event held in February of the Long Course Season at HBF, Mt Claremont. An inclusive event that is designed to ensure participation of all swimmers in individual events or team relays. Points are given to each club and at the end of the day, a championship trophy is awarded to the club with the most points. The Club Premiership is split into four divisions to ensure fairness and equality across the event. Swimmers can compete in a maximum of 2 individual events in their age group and another 2 in older age groups.

Qualifying times are not required for this event. However, coaches select team swimmers.

League Championship: A more competitive club based event held in March of the Long Course Season for swimmers aged 8 years to Open, and is held against other clubs in our “League”. Clubs across Western Australia have been divided into “Leagues”. The FPSC forms part of “League 4” and includes the following clubs:

  • South Shore Swimming Club
  • South Lake Dolphins Swimming Club
  • Kwinana Swimming Club
  • Armadale-Kelmscott Swimming Club
  • Rockingham Swim Club
  • Southside Penrhos-Wesley Swimming Club

The format of this event is still to be finalised by Swimming WA.

Qualifying times are not required for this event.

Competitive Swim Meets

Competitive Swim meets are Swimming WA or Swimming Australia Sanctioned meets and include the following:

  • Swimming WA sanctioned swim meets hosted by clubs or Swimming WA
  • End of Season Championships
  • State Long Course and Short Course Championships
  • Age and Open Nationals

The competitive swimming season is run in both winter (April to September) and summer (October to April) and runs concurrently with our Club Nights.  The winter season is completed in a ‘short course’ format in a pool length of 25m, and the summer season is completed in a ‘long course’ format in a 50m pool. Swim meets are held at host club pools and at HBF in Mt Claremont. FPSC send out a calendar of targeted meets at the beginning of each season.

The Swimming WA sanctioned events provide a pathway to State and National competition:

State Age Swimmers (Male 14+, Female 13+): FPSC target around 4-5 of the Swimming WA sanctioned meets per season.

In order to compete at the State Championships and the National Swimming Competition, swimmers must swim qualifying times in any of the Swimming WA sanctioned events. Qualifying times are set by Swimming Australia and Swimming WA at the beginning of each season.

For State Age swimmers who do not qualify for Nationals, Swimming WA hold a 4-day End-of-Season Championship in April at HBF, Mt Claremont. Eligibility will be based the qualifying times shown in the above link.

Junior Swimmers (Male 13/U, Female 12/U): FPSC target around 4-5 of the Swimming WA sanctioned meets per season.

From the commencement of the 2023/24 Long Course season, Swimming WA require junior swimmers to achieve a minimum time (or qualifying time) for some events in order to compete at a Swimming WA sanctioned meet.

Juniors who are competitive may seek to compete at the Junior State Competitions. They will require to achieve State Qualifying times to enter.
